Preserving Our Heritage, Uniting Our Community
Terai Samaj is proud to organise the annual Chhath Puja celebration, one of the most significant festivals for the Terai community. This sacred festival honours the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya, expressing gratitude for life and the blessings of nature.
Our celebration brings together families from across Adelaide to observe traditional rituals including the preparation of thekua and other prasad, the holy dip, and the offering of arghya to the setting and rising sun at a local waterfront location.
The event is open to all community members and their families. We provide a welcoming environment where traditional practices are observed with reverence, and newcomers can learn about the deep cultural significance of this ancient festival.
Volunteers help with site preparation, ensuring clean and safe access to the waterfront, arranging prasad distribution, and coordinating logistics so that every participant can observe the rituals comfortably.
This annual gathering has become a cornerstone event for the Terai community in Australia, strengthening bonds between families and preserving the spiritual traditions that connect us to our homeland. Each year, participation grows as more community members discover the warmth and devotion of this celebration.
Attendees can look forward to traditional rituals performed at sunrise and sunset, community-prepared prasad, devotional songs (Chhath geet), and an opportunity to connect with fellow community members. Families are encouraged to bring children to experience and learn about this important cultural tradition.
